With the purpose of comparing the 3 types of pit and fissure sealants in regards of
marginal sealing and penetration. 60 extracted human premolars were divided into 3
groups, 20 specimens of each group were treated with light cured White Sealant,
chemically cored White Sealant and glass ionomer cement sealant. After thermal cycling,
these specimens were immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsine, sectioned, and then immersed in
0.5% methylene blue. The marginal sealing and penetration into pits and fissures of
sealant materials were observed and evaluated.
The results obtained were as follows :
1. Specimens sealed with the light cured type of resin sealant had less frequency of
marginal leakage than those sealed with the chemically cured type resin sealant and
glass ionomer cement sealant.
2. With respect to penetration into pits and fissures of sealant materials, no sealant
materials penetrated perfectly into deep narrow fissures and no significant was observed
among sealant materials. Fissures of V type showed the most extensive penetration and
fissures of I type showed the least penetration.
